The primary purpose of The American Board of Orthodontics is to elevate the level of orthodontic care for the public by encouraging excellence in clinical practice and specialty education. Board certification is a process that is totally voluntary. Orthodontists do not need to be Board Certified to practice their specialty or see patients. Those that do decide to become Board Certified invest a significant amount of time and money to achieve this honor. The certification is a three part process that can take several years to complete; A written exam, an oral exam, and a presentation of completed cases for evaluation. Currently less than half the Orthodontists in the US can call themselves Board Certified.
